The future of live visuals with Disguise

From Adele to Beyoncé, Coachella to Glastonbury, this company's tech is powering some of the world's most awe-inspiring experiences. We learn how it works on the latest Creators In Session.

Our Creators In Session masterclass series returns this month for its second season.

Every other week, we'll bring you masterclasses from leading creators in the experience industry in conversation with Easol's own experts.

This new season of Creators In Session will dive into the future of experiential marketing and explore where digital communities are thriving in 2024, plus take a look at some of the biggest emerging players in location-based entertainment.

The future of live visuals

To kick off the new series, we invited live visual experience platform Disguise's solutions director Peter Kirkup to share his insights on the future of the industry with our cofounder Lisa Simpson.

In their chat, Kirkup talks about Disguise's early aughts beginnings spinning off of a creative agency innovating software for live concert visuals for the likes of Massive Attack, and expansion into providing the hardware and service components of immersive experiences, as well as evolving their software to incorporate AI and augmented-reality technology.

Today, Disguise produces world-class tour and live performance staging for Beyoncé, Adele, Madonna and Ed Sheeran, groundbreaking festival pieces like Block9's IICON stage at Glastonbury, and location-based setups like movie sets and immersive wildlife experience Illuminarium

Spine-tingling moments

In addition to the complex weaving of the multiple layers involved in Disguise's productions — 4K projectors, LED screens, sensors, pre-visualisation planning, custom software and more —  Kirkup says what really drives Disguise is innovation: "It's about the world-first. It's about the next never-been-done-before."

"I have a background in theatre, and for me, that spine-tingling moment when Cinderella's coach appears on stage out of magic is what we strive for every day", he says. "There's moments like that that we can create that are memories that get seeded in somebody that they will live with their whole life and they'll draw on for other experiences in their life and come back to… If we can achieve a few of those moments, we're doing the right things."

Kirkup also underlined how that magic moment can be key to your experience business's word-of-mouth success and staying power. "Everyone wants to have that moment on social media where something goes viral, something creates a buzz and a stimulus for a wider audience to get exposed to their event or their moment", he says. "We're seeing that that's happening across all of the different sectors. We've been calling it 'the IMAXification of live events'."
